9.36 Parental Leave

In order to assist and support new parent relationships and to assist with balancing work and family matters, Wilmington College provides Paid Parental Leave to eligible full-time employees after 6 months of employment.

Paid Parental Leave is defined as leave for the birth of a child to an eligible employee (biological parent) or the placement of a child with an eligible employee for adoption (each of which is a qualifying event) and excludes other types of leave. Although birthing and non-birthing parents are eligible for Paid Parental Leave, if both parents are employees of Wilmington College, one parent can elect to use the full Paid Parental Leave benefit, or the parents can split the Paid Parental leave benefit between them.  The College should be notified as soon as possible of the employee's need for a parental leave and of the specific period during which the employee expects to be absent.

Paid Parental Leave must be completed within one year of the qualified event and may not be taken intermittently.  However, Paid Parental Leave may be granted prior to an adoption when deemed necessary to fulfill legal requirements.

Paid Parental Leave will run concurrently with Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) when an employee is eligible for both leaves.  Paid Parental Leave will be coordinated with and supplement Short Term Disability benefits when applicable.

Employees on Paid Parental Leave will maintain their benefits, and deductions for required taxes and benefit premiums will be taken.

Full-time employees are eligible for up to 10 weeks of Paid Parental Leave at 100% of their base compensation. For the birthing parent, Paid Parental Leave will be combined and coordinated with  short-term disability benefits if the employee is eligible for those benefits. However, the combined short-term disability and Paid Parental Leave benefits may not exceed 12 weeks.
